English aromatherapist and beauty therapist Beverley Higham has over 30 years of teaching experience. Trained by the renowned Shirley Price, she is passionate about formulating skincare products. In 2004, she received the Inspiration Challenge Award and a Medal of Excellence from the City & Guilds of London Institute.
How did you initially get involved with aromatherapy, and what made you start working with essential oils?
I was training to be a teacher. One of my colleagues gave a presentation on aromatherapy, and suddenly, it was like being struck by lightning! I had found my calling. I booked a course in London, and my aromatherapy career started.
What inspired you to start teaching?
I was a Teacher of Beauty Therapy and Spa Management. I saw aromatherapy as an extension of the work I was already doing. I loved to share knowledge and see the transformations in people.
What is/was your philosophy in teaching aromatherapy and other complementary therapies?
All that is not given is lost! If you have a gift or a passion, you must share it. Also, no one can learn what you learn for yourself. Experience is our greatest teacher. You are never too old to start something new! One of my students was 76 when he began studying with me.
What would be your tips for a new or upcoming aromatherapist new to the field?
Learn all you can, read a lot, and attend live teaching. Practise and do lots of work experience. The client is your canvas to create great work.
