Essential oils have powerful therapeutic properties, and in my practice, I rely on tools like the aromatogram to better understand their antibacterial and antifungal activity. While gas chromatography tells me the precise chemical composition of an oil, the aromatogram shows how specific essential oils act against actual germs taken from a patient. This ensures that I prescribe oils based not only on theory, but on targeted laboratory evidence.
The aromatogram works much like an antibiogram. A microbial sample from the patient is cultured in a petri dish, and small discs infused with selected essential oils are placed on the medium. After incubation, I observe which oils inhibit microbial growth. This allows me to determine which oils a particular germ is most sensitive to, using concentrations known to be therapeutically active.
In cases of chronic infection, I may request aromatograms regularly to monitor progress and adjust treatment. However, I do not automatically choose the strongest oil shown in the lab; I always consider the patient’s overall condition and possible contraindications. Often, I combine several oils to enhance effectiveness and reduce resistance. For me, the aromatogram is a valuable clinical tool that helps personalize essential oil therapy safely and effectively.
