Bridging the Gap: Rhiannon Lewis on the Global Evolution of Clinical Aromatherapy By Shari Emami

Pg. 50-55 - 5-minute read

When I first met Rhiannon Lewis, I immediately felt a strong connection with her teaching philosophy. Like me, she believes in addressing the root causes of patients’ concerns and upholding the scientific integrity of aromatherapy. What I admire most about her approach is her unwavering commitment to patient-centered care—ensuring that the patient’s voice and experiences remain at the heart of every therapeutic decision. Learning about her work and contributions has deepened my appreciation for her remarkable influence in the field of complementary medicine.

Rhiannon Lewis is widely recognized as a global authority in clinical aromatherapy. She is the director of Essential Oil Resource Consultants in France and the founder of the International Clinical Aromatherapy Network (ICAN), a global community connecting over 2,000 professionals across more than 90 countries. Through initiatives such as the Botanica conference series and the Essence of Clinical Aromatherapy International Seminar, she has created platforms for education, collaboration, and professional development. Her mission has always been to ensure the safe, effective, and evidence-based use of essential oils within clinical environments.

Her career began in nursing before she transitioned to clinical aromatherapy, where she continued her passion for reducing patient suffering. Over the years, she has championed the integration of aromatherapy into healthcare systems, from hospitals to hospices. She emphasizes the importance of building a strong evidence base while also valuing practice-based insights. Through ICAN, she promotes research, professional dialogue, and the sharing of clinical experiences while maintaining a strong commitment to patient-centered care.

What makes Rhiannon especially impactful is her ability to bridge the gap between holistic healing and scientific medicine. She believes both intuition and evidence-based practice have their place in clinical aromatherapy. By adapting communication and fostering collaboration between practitioners, researchers, and healthcare professionals, she has helped elevate aromatherapy as a respected component of integrative healthcare. Her legacy, I believe, lies in her commitment to collaboration, respect for the natural world, and her vision of a united global community advancing the practice of clinical aromatherapy.
