Emu Oil By Anita Kalnay

Pg. 98-105 - 7-minute read

Before COVID, I really didn't work with Emu oil much. I had heard of it and had sourced it once previously from Mt. Sicker Family Farm on Vancouver Island, BC, in Canada. I have lived on a few Gulf Islands off the Vancouver Island, BC, coastal area. We used to hop on the ferry from Gabriola Island for discovery outings. I remember driving by an emu farm and ordering a few products, but I didn't really think much of their value - until COVID hit!

During the lockdown, I created a body butter using emu oil from a local supplier, Willow Springs Emu Oil. I designed it to help restore dry skin from constant handwashing and sanitiser use. Adding emu oil made a huge difference—client feedback showed it improved the product more than I expected. After reading Dr. Bill Code’s Emu Oil: An Ancient Remedy, I learned that adding natural beeswax helps slow emu oil absorption and creates a light waterproof layer for the skin. I discovered this by accident while sourcing local ingredients, but it turned out to be an essential part of the formula.

Emus are fascinating, unusual birds. Growing up in southern Saskatchewan, I remember watching emu and ostrich races at Frontier Days in Swift Current—they were hilarious! Cowboys used brooms to steer the birds by blocking one eye so they’d run in the right direction. Emus can run up to 31 mph and even swim using their big feet like flippers. Although they can’t fly, emus have a thick fat layer that helps them survive months without food in the Australian outback. Interestingly, it’s the male emu that sits on the eggs for 54 days without eating, while the females move on—quite the role reversal! Emus have only been farmed as livestock for about 40 years, but their oil continues to prove its remarkable value in skincare.
