Healing from the inside out: my top seven herbs for leaky gut and digestive health in dogs By Lyndall Pinchen

Pg. 48-55 - 7-minute read

Just like humans, dogs can develop digestive imbalances such as leaky gut syndrome, a condition where the intestinal lining becomes compromised. The gut lining acts as a vital barrier, allowing nutrients into the body while keeping toxins and harmful particles out. When factors such as processed diets, medications, environmental toxins, chronic stress, or food sensitivities weaken this barrier, the intestinal cells become more permeable. This allows unwanted particles to enter the bloodstream, triggering inflammation that can affect not only digestion but also the skin, immune system, behavior, and overall vitality.

Leaky gut in dogs often begins with subtle symptoms that may worsen over time if unaddressed. Signs can include digestive issues like bloating, diarrhea, or vomiting; skin problems such as itching or dull coat; recurring infections or allergies; behavioral changes related to the gut–brain connection; and general fatigue or poor recovery. From a natural medicine perspective, the goal is not only to manage symptoms but to restore intestinal integrity, rebalance the immune response, and support the body’s healing processes.

Herbal medicine can play a powerful role in this approach. Certain herbs soothe and protect the gut lining, reduce inflammation, support beneficial gut bacteria, aid liver detoxification, and calm the nervous system. Seven herbs I frequently incorporate for leaky gut and digestive support include slippery elm and marshmallow root for mucosal protection and repair; liquorice root for inflammation control and immune modulation; chamomile for calming both digestion and the nervous system; boswellia for deeper anti-inflammatory support; dandelion root for digestive and liver function; and fennel for relieving gas and improving gut motility.

When combined with a species-appropriate diet, reduced chemical exposure, and supportive lifestyle practices, these herbs help restore gut balance and strengthen overall resilience. Rather than simply masking symptoms, this holistic approach encourages true healing by supporting the body’s natural repair mechanisms, ultimately helping dogs regain comfort, vitality, and long-term health.
