Giant's Interview with Salvatore Battaglia By Gergely Hollódi

Updated: Mar 8

Pg. 52-58 5-minute read

How did you initially get involved with aromatherapy?

I do not often tell this story, but back in 1987 aromatherapy was my hobby, while acupuncture and naturopathy were my true profession. However, many of my clients were far more interested in trying aromatherapy rather than being prescribed herbal tinctures or having acupuncture. I was so surprised that many of my client's health improved after experiencing essential oils for the first time. This made me realise that I ought to take a more serious interest in aromatherapy, even though there was nowhere to study aromatherapy in Australia at the time.

Where do you think energetics fit in the framework of aromatherapy?

If we are to practice a more integrative style of aromatherapy then the energetics

of essential oils plays a very important role in the framework of aromatherapy. Many of my presentations at conferences have addressed the need to adopt a holistic framework to understand the energetics of essential oils.

I have always promoted TCM as that framework, only because of my training

as an acupuncturist. Other energetic models such as the subtle body, chakras or Ayurveda can also be easily incorporated into any aromatherapy training.

What was your inspiration to write Aromatree, and how is it unique?

As an educator I always want to make learning aromatherapy fun. I found the Aromatree such a useful tool to classify the features and properties of essential oils according to the part of the plant from which they were extracted. This is by no means a new concept and in the Aromatree book I do acknowledge the work of many other aromatherapists who have helped me establish the aromatree concept. The Aromatree is such a useful tool. For example, I have just developed a masterclass which explores the role of aromatherapy

in helping us to flourish. I have used a model for flourishing established by Dr Martin Seligman who advocates that flourishing arises from five wellbeing pillars – positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishment. I have then assigned different parts of the Aromatree to help establish the many pathways in which aromatherapy

can help us flourish.
