Interview with Linda Anne Kahn By Michelle Ensley

Pg. 22-28 - 6-minute read

The term aromatherapy was coined in the 1930s by René-Maurice Gattefossé and later introduced through his book on essential oils. Over the years, many passionate individuals—both scientific and non-scientific—helped shape the education and spread of aromatherapy.

As the world continues to change, we also see shifts and challenges within this therapy that was originally rooted in the healing power of essential oils. With a new generation emerging, we wanted to look back at the pioneers—the giants—who worked tirelessly to gain recognition for this field.

In this edition, Aromatika editor Michelle Ensley interviewed Linda Anne Kahn, a South African-born American clinical aromatherapist known for her work in aromatherapy and lymphatic care. A former beauty therapist, Linda began her aromatherapy training in 1983 in London under Eve Taylor and later became a respected teacher and international speaker.

How did you initially get involved with aromatherapy, and what made you start working with essential oils?

I graduated as an ITEC Beauty Therapist in South Africa in 1978. Shortly after, Arnould Taylor, head of ITEC in London, came to South Africa and offered two postgraduate workshops – one on aromatherapy and one on lymph drainage and cellulite. At that time, I had never worked with essential oils and knew almost nothing about them. But I was so inspired during those workshops that I felt something awaken in me. I had no idea then how profoundly they would shape the path of my career, but looking back, that was the true beginning of my journey with aromatherapy and lymph drainage.

What is your first memory about your first contact with essential oils?

As I smelled Ylang-ylang for the very first time, I felt that I was being transported to

another world. I imagined I was in an Egyptian temple, and I knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life.

What is/was your philosophy in teaching aromatherapy?

I taught an aromatherapy certification program for over 25 years. My goal was to inspire my students to be as passionate about aromatherapy as I am, and to incorporate oils into their everyday lives and those of their families. I made sure my students experienced the oils at all levels and became proficient in conducting professional interviews and expert blending. Our classes were in person and were very powerful, with such healing taking place.
