Let's talk about artificial and synthetic fragrance! By Eric Scott Bresselsmith

Pg. 26-29 - 3-minute read

Over the past four decades of my personal wellness journey, I have come to believe that petrochemicals belong in machines—not in our bodies, homes, or daily lives. Yet petroleum-derived substances have quietly become embedded in countless products we use every day, from artificial fragrances, flavours, and colours to textiles, cleaning products, and even medications. While labels often identify artificial ingredients, allowing us to make more conscious choices, the sheer prevalence of petrochemicals in modern society raises important questions about their impact on our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

I have also become increasingly aware of how deeply petrochemicals influence our food system. Many fruits, vegetables, and grains are grown with synthetic fertilisers, insecticides, and pesticides, then preserved, coloured, packaged, and stored using petroleum-based materials. Even foods perceived as healthy can carry a significant petrochemical footprint. The same pattern extends to pet foods, household products, and personal care items, creating an environment where exposure to synthetic substances has become almost unavoidable.

What concerns me further is that petrochemicals have permeated our living spaces. Synthetic fibres such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and spandex surround our bodies, while our homes are filled with petroleum-based paints, adhesives, flooring, furniture, and fabrics. Beyond potential health concerns, these materials can contribute to environmental degradation and pose serious risks when they burn, releasing toxic fumes harmful to all living beings. Even within the aromatherapy industry, many products marketed as natural contain synthetic compounds, making informed consumer choices more important than ever.

As science increasingly highlights the effects of “nature deficit” on human health, my experience as an informal aromatherapist continues to reinforce the value of nature-based scents and products. I have witnessed how natural aromatics can support physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness. While the industrial petrochemical economy continues to shape modern life, I believe positive change begins with simple, intentional choices—supporting regionally grown food, learning about our ancestral needs, choosing natural alternatives when possible, and embracing technologies that serve both human and non-human communities. The Earth is our shared home, and each of us has the power to make a meaningful difference.
