Riverwood and Sea Rose By Deby Atterby

Pg. 22-26 - 4-minute read

I begin by honouring the traditional owners of the lands where I gather my native ingredients, work, and live. Their stories and culture continue to inspire me deeply. Although I’m not a perfumer in the classical sense, my work revolves around creating odour-signature blends based on my understanding of Australian essential oils. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea that every person has a unique “smell print,” shaped by genetics, hormones, diet, and even emotions—an invisible name tag that makes each of us chemically distinct.

My curiosity about odour signatures naturally led me deeper into the science behind scent, memory, and the limbic system. I became captivated by how aroma molecules can shift our emotional state, support cognitive health, and influence our reactions. This understanding changed the way I create natural perfumes. For me, it’s no longer just about making something that smells beautiful—it’s about crafting a personalised olfactory identity that supports both emotional wellbeing and self-expression. In my classes, I guide students through the chemistry of essential oils, the art of blending top, middle, and base notes, and ethical choices around native plants, all while acknowledging that a fragrance will always evolve uniquely on each person’s skin.

My inspiration often comes from Australia itself—its people, stories, and landscapes. Time spent with friends of the Bundjalung people helped me shape two special native perfume blends rooted in Dreamtime stories, one masculine and one feminine. Whether I’m developing a signature scent or formulating a perfume for someone navigating life changes, like menopause, my goal is always the same: to create something that nurtures, restores confidence, and reflects the wearer’s personal journey. Through this practice, I’ve discovered that blending with native essential oils is not only an art form but a powerful way to bring wellness, identity, and a touch of magic into everyday life.
