Scent's Profound Link To Memory By Holly Brandenberger

Pg. 12-15 - 3-minute read

Growing up on a Christmas tree farm instilled in the author a deep connection to the aromas of pine, spruce, and cedar. These earthy and woody scents became symbols of safety, peace, and happiness, evoking cherished childhood memories of playing with siblings and working among the trees. This connection illustrates the strong link between scent and memory—similar to how the smell of bread might remind someone of their grandmother or freshly cut grass might bring back memories of a parent. The author highlights that our strongest scent-memory associations are formed in childhood, which is why certain aromas can instantly transport us back to those early moments, even when we don't consciously remember them.

This powerful ability of smell to trigger emotions is known as the "Proust phenomenon," where scents have the unique ability to unlock vivid memories more effectively than any other sense. Pleasant scents can continue to soothe us throughout our lives, while unpleasant ones can trigger negative emotions. The author shares a personal example of using a blend of Hawaiian sandalwood and lime during a family vacation and how diffusing the same blend years later brought back joyful memories of that trip. By intentionally pairing scents with meaningful life moments—weddings, births, travel—we can create emotional anchors that allow us to relive those experiences whenever we encounter the same aroma in the future.

Scents also influence mood and motivation, a process called odour conditioning. Positive associations—like using essential oils during a relaxing bath, yoga session, or meditation—train the brain to recall that calm feeling when smelling the oils again later. The author encourages readers to intentionally engage their sense of smell, especially as it naturally diminishes with age, since regular stimulation can support brain health and memory retention. Essential oils are presented as a powerful tool to enhance wellbeing, promote relaxation, and create emotional balance. Understanding how they work, how they are made, and how to use them safely allows us to harness their full potential in everyday life, making scent a meaningful part of our wellness journey.
